Default OT: So I guess that they will be going after shop vacs next?

    From an article in Yahoo....

A settlement of $7.5M has been reached in a class action suit involving eight lawnmower companies. They were accused of overstating horsepower ratings. They charged customers more for power that was nothing more than acoustic trickery.

Looks like our friends up north take their lawn mower ratings seriously.

The over stating of HP on just about everything is really nothing new.
When I saw your post I instantly thought of all those big fancy air compressors that started hitting the market in the early 80's boasting HP ratings of around 5 HP when in fact they were much less.
I used to call them fake 5's. I believe that they would develop 5 hp at maximum RPM's, maybe ! THE CFM output told the real story but most buyers didn't pay any attention to that.
It's pretty sad that every one has to over state specs to make sales. I guess that's what too much competition does.

I thought shop vacs were rated like routers...
Plug them in to unlimited amps, load them til the smoke comes out, then rate them by the max amps they pulled before they croaked.

It's rather difficult to determine the actual HP of a gas powered mower. ICEs are typically rated peak HP, which is at a certain RPM and torque. An electrical motor is much easier to test, and it can provide up to two or three times the rated power for short durations. So a 5 HP push mower might be able to use a 2 HP electric motor. People are really too much obsessed with power, and not enough about efficiency, noise abatement, and pollution. I like my electric lawn tools!

You mean to tell me my shop vac with it's dinky power cord, pulling 12 amps on 120 VAC isn't actually 6.5 hp? Say it ain't so!
