    DOH!.... JCB is right. For .0005 for .001 movement you need to be set to 30 off the spindle axis (so compound sitting closer to parallel than to right angle) .

    Apparently I should not have been so agreeable....

    I'm not good at trig, so please help me out,
    IF 6' = .0001" on your compound dial, and IF 30' = .0005" on your dial
    THEN is it correct (or rounded off to correct) that:
    .0001 = 6'
    .0002 = 12'
    .0003 = 18'
    .0004 = 24'
    .0005 = 30'

    ????

    Nope. You've seen a sine wave, right? That's the function involved, not a straight line.

    There are no stupid questions. But there are lots of stupid answers. This is the internet.

    Sorry about that,
    this thread is full of good info, but,
    After getting the mill home and examining (a BS9 mill wont go in)
    it is not BS9.

    I dont get it.
    I found numerous threads on internet calling this thing BS9.
    Nobody disputed it, and several confirmed it.
    It is not.
    There is nothing that calls this MT3.
    But it is.

    Did you join the Sheldon group? Perhaps talk to the Sheldon machine Guru: John Knox?

    I must be missing something on that group.
    I looked for it, and found lathes, no mills, and no traffic.
    Am I missing something?

    So perhaps someone made a new main shaft with an MT3 taper for the same reasons you were considering it?

    thats an interesting thought. however, in the time of running this thread, I have found sources for BS9. I was about ready to pull the trigger on some purchases of that stuff.
    the prior owner could have sources back in his day.
