    Post stubbing

How big should the stub be when repairing a shaft? The fine article in the latest issue mentions that common sense will dictate.
Should I make the stub one half the diameter? Or, should I make the stub one half the area of the cross section?
One half of the diameter of a 1-1/2" shaft would give a stub of .75" while one half of the area of cross section would give a stub with diameter of 1.06"
Also, the outer part will be stiffer even with the same area than the solid stub, and you will be drilling a disproportionatly large amount from the stub when you put in the taper pin.
Any good rules-of-thumb or rules-of-stub to make both parts equally strong?

    thanks,
    crunchy
