Default TiN Coated Dies For Threading Stainless

I need to thread some 304 SS rod 5/16" - 18. I used a HSS die and got a couple good threads before they started looking pretty chewed up.
The die didn't last long. Would chromium or TiN coated hold out better??

What, if anything, were you using as a cutting fluid?

Yeah, with a "good" die and some decent cutting fluid cutting a few threads on SS shouldn't be an issue...

You sure it wasn't just a carbon steel die? I've cut numerous threads with HSS on both 304 and316, sometimes without cutting oil, without any problems.

Yes, I was using cutting oil. I use Rigid pipe threading oil. I use it for all my threading, turning and milling.
It works good on everything. Is there something better I could try on this stainless?

The die is HSS made by Widell.

Don't recall just now what it is called- there was something that looked like green pudding that worked quite well on stainless.

Maybe you just got less than stellar die to start with.

JBO makes TIN coated, nitrided, HSS-CO and you-name-it what specials but good luck finding them in US.

This stuff right here ?? I never heard of it. There is so much stuff out there that you have to wonder does any one work better than the other??
There is no magic oil that will make a tap cut through stainless like it was aluminum. None that I have found anyway.

Abom79 was pushing that stuff when he was getting it for free. It looked messy to me and didn't stay in place. I haven't seen him use it in a while. All his cutting oil comes out of an oil can now. SS is as rare as hen's teeth around here so I can't help otherwise.
