    Default OT; Epson printer scam

    I thought this was illegal.

Epson firmware update last night, now it won't recognize any cartridges but theirs.

I also thought that practice had been banned, however that might just be for the Epson printer monitor utility, which actually makes some sense since other vendors don't necessarily meet Epson's capacity/quality specs. Did you try disabling the monitor on the printer control panel?

Never mind. This article: http://www.inkbank.com.au/webcontent31.htm says that if you've updated the firmware there may be nothing you can do about the problem. The same article recommends against enabling auto firmware updates. Why fix it if it isn't broken?

I don't trust any inkjet from any company, I just won't buy one. I like my Brother color laser, but the damn thing likes to blow 15 amp CB's when warming up. Had the best reviews on Amazon, it's really meant for a medium sized office being used continually. Have to order Toner for it shortly.

When I picked up a Epson on sale to replace my cartridge printer, the printer was cheaper than a set of cartridges.
So far I have used 3rd party replacements with no problem, must remember to turn off auto update.
The couple of updates so far have not been a problem.
    Max.

Same thing happened to me about a year ago. I did extensive research on the internet and tried several solutions. None worked. Crossed Epson off my list of acceptable vendors. The practice may have been banned, but many vendors flagrantly violate such laws. As a practical matter it's impossible for a consumer to get any redress.

I have a Brother MFC-9320cw laser printer I bought at ~local auction for $25. I've been using the LD brand of laser cartridges and they work perfectly. I bought all four for less than one Brother cartridge. And these are NEW, not refilled. The color is full and rich with exceptional detail. Much nicer than my Brother color inkjet. Look for the LD brand on Amazon.
This is the set I get for color: https://www.amazon.com/LD-Compatible...dp/B00AQLC7N6/
    This is the Black: https://www.amazon.com/LD-Compatible...dp/B003H0B2WU/

What bothers me about the Brother color inkjet is its hunger for ink cartridges. It will clean itself empty in less than the month. But I can replace all four color ink cartridges for less than $7 so I keep it around and use it for what-not prints. Turning it off doesn't stop the cleaning cycles either--It has to be unplugged.
I use these Ebay cartridges for my inkjet: https://www.ebay.com/itm/283151639173 You get two black and three color.

Thank you, when the time comes, I'll order a set from LD

This is the last Epson printer I will buy. 15 months old began leaking all over my desk.
Epson would only send me the discontinued printer (the same printer) under warranty. So ran over it with my truck and sent it back, in pieces, to Epson in my new Canon printer box. I hope it leaked all over their desks.

Now that I've thought about it, I believe what actually happened was that the mfg couldn't void the warranty because someone uses 3rd party consumables.

Head cleaning uses about half of your ink in most inkjet printers. Brother has you take the printer in to one of their service centers when the service light comes on. What they service is the reservoir for the cleaning ink which requires taking the unit to pieces. And they charge almost as much as a new printer! Just to dump the trash. Epson is worse from what I hear. Our HP quit about an hour after the think leaked ink all over the desk. When I tried to move it, more poured out of the junk tank. And there is nothing in the instructions about the problem!!!
