    Post tool bit grinding fixture

I saw this fixture in an add on ebay. It apparently appeared in the Aug. 1990 issue of projects in metal in an article by Alberto Marx called "on the cutting edge".

I have been trying to find some sort of simple setup that would allow me to grind lathe tools with angles that are accurate and foolproof, without having to build a Quorn T&C grinder or something. This thing looks like it has potential to be just what I need and shouldn't take more than a week of evenings to make. Has anyone tried one of these? Does anyone have this article and if so could they post any other pictures so that I can get a better idea of how it works?

    thanks

Back issues are available from the friendly hosts of this BHS; well deserving of your patronage.

For a another, perhaps simpler, approach to the problem, see also "Sharpening HSS Lathe Toolbits" in the July/Aug 2003 issue of HSM.

I have been a HSM subscriber, but according to the website, back issues are only available back one year. I would gladly buy that one issue, but I can't see buying a $40 book (the compendium books) for just one jig when I don't know how or how well it works. I have a basic idea but I can't tell if it is somehow aligned or anchored to the toolrest on the grinder.

As I recall, the magazine will sell you a copy of one article for about $5.00. I did this once and with my fax at work and using my credit card, I had the article almost instantly. They were very helpful!!!

I picked up what looks like a simple HSS bit grinding fixture from some long forgotten source a while back that might be of interest.

It's a block of steel with an angled slot down the center and angled faces:

Jim Glass has another and much simpler type that he uses on a surface grinder. I'm pretty sure that he's posted pictures here so a search of the archives should turn that up.

Hi Fred, I will try that route. Thanks for the tip.
