Thread: mill/drill - loose quill

    Post mill/drill - loose quill

Just discovered this great site while searching HSM mag for an article! I've abused my import mill/drill and now there's excessive radial play between the quill and the cast iron housing/bearing surface. I'm assuming that the wear is in the casting. Are there any practical "fixes" out there? [HSM mag lists an archived article entitled "quill bearing repair" - does anyone remember anything from it?]

No easy fixes. Shimming, rebuilding. A product that may help is called "Moglice" www.moglice.com

It has been used to repair half nuts and machine slides - it is a moly impregnated resin that can be poured or injected to take up slack. You may want to email them and ask them if they feel it is practical enough to do in your case. If I had to keep the machine I would consider it.
