    Post My Shop Made Transfer Punch

    fig.01-A homebuilt transfer punch for holes up to 1-1/4 inch.

    -- clockwise-left to right--
    * 1-1/4 in shaft 1-3/4 inches long with a taper turned on one end and a 1/4 in hole bored thru using a lathe.
    * 1 1/4 inch I.D. tubing 1 inch long faced square on both ends.
    * 1/4 inch transfer punch.

    fig. 02 - Tapered end of center piece set in hole to be transfered to workpiece.

    fig. 03 - The outside tubing placed over the inside tapered part to line up the center part (to keep it straight up and down instead of cocked in the hole) and a 1/4 inch transfer punch inserted in the center hole to center punch the center of the hole for drilling.

    I get lots of odd sized holes and this tool kind of eliminates making special sized sleeves and is simple to make and accurate.

    I gotta think about that. Seems like a good idea. I mostly need it for small holes though where accuracy may suffer.

    Well thought out. Similar to commerical units except they do not keep the punch perpindicular with a sleeve as yours does. A litle toolblack or some bluing and it will be spiffy - Nicely done!

    Make it with a steeper taper.

    I worked in a place that had a large assortment of bolts, I'd cut them off right in front of the threads, put them in the company lathe and bore a 1/4" hole through them. I had a full set once.
    When I left I was reminded it was company property as was my time to build them on my lunch hour. Asshole foreman has them now. You remember "dick" Or was it Pete?
