My office is throwing out an old microfiche reader, and I'm wondering if I can use it as something else. Can it be converted to an optical measuring projectors? Has anyone done anything useful with it?

I would take it home
car dealers these days are chucking out all there microfiche files ..they going or have gone the computer route.
you could get off the dealers the files on your car ...they do whole workshop manuals in microfiche including parts manuals.
this way you get the actual manufacturors manuals and not some poor haynes crap....and probably you will get them for nothing.
Also these machines can be used as an aid to assembling clocks and watches .....they magnify.
all the best..mark
The price is right, take it home and tinker with it!

It would probably block your view.

The opal glass is a key component for an optical projector - grab the machine for sure - the glass is extremely expensive. The other optical components may come in handy for the projector as well...
I have a chunk of opal glass for one myself, but am far from starting the project.
