    Post Drill Press Stop

Anyone have any plans to build a simple drill press stop for my small 10" Ryobi benchtop press? Seems that it comes with a depth gage stop, but, something to physically prevent the quill from coming down past a certain distance is just not there.

I am using it to drill out/trim the necks of some brass cartridge hulls (before I ream them) and the need to control the depth is pretty important.

    Thanks!

    Squeaky,
I run one of those Deckel fp4 mills at work with the same problem.
Have to run the spindle out till it bottoms and set depth with the table height.
Maybe you could put a jack under the table to get the same effect.

I bored a collar for the quill on my asian press, run a 1/2 by 20 threaded rod from the collar. bolted a chunk of iron, drilled 1/2 to the head. Three nuts under the chunk of iron and one over. the under nuts make a lock nut for setting depth min and max. On the other side I put a 2" travel dial indicator to measure travel. have to use a 2" block on top of the collar to reach the DI tip when i go over two inches. If it was all to over, I 'd makethe quill collar even larger and use it as a temporary storage shelf (holes in collar). The depth gauge is a nice feature. You can see your drill cut every revolution, and hit holes very close to right depth. A cobbled up affair that works for me

You know what is really funny (until it happens to oneself) is whizzing the axis dial when you thought it was y-axis and you had it in z-axis and hammering the spindle into the bed, killing the 2" drill in the spindle and said spindle.

    ...you want how much!?

    SqueekyTom,

Have you looked at the case trimmers sold by MidwayUSA? They automatically stop cutting when the pin on the cutter's pilot hits the shell holder. Don't see why you couldn't rig one of them up on your drill press.

No. 3 Son used to use a B & D power screwdriver to spin his trimmer and the .30-06 cases turned out beautifully uniform.

    Good luck!!
