  • UNWANTED MAGNETISM

PLEASE HELP! I recently inherited a Jet bench mill/drill. Once I got everything set up, I eagerly started machining a piece of cast iron. Most of the chips did not fly everywhere as they usually do. Here's the problem: the vise and table are magnetised! Does anyone know of a way to demagnetise ferrous materials?

Check the industrial tool catalogs (MSC www.mscdirect.com and others) for demagnetizers. Radio Shack might even have something, although it may not be big enough to be practical.

Basically, what you need is an alternating-current electromagnet. Bring it up close to the magnetized piece, then slowly draw it away.

Thanks, SGW! MSC has several affordable models. I'll give one a try soon.
