I finally did it,built a tap stand for 6-32 and smaller taps.Been wanting to do this for a long time.


Post is 3/4" hard chrome rod,arm milled from 1 x 1-1/2" 6061.Tap holder is 1/2" hardchrome.


The base is just hot rolled I stress relieved.
I made this tap shank to fit all my taps from 6-32 down,the tap in the unit is a #1-72.

Just if anybody is wondering,yes that is a bar of soap in the pic,best lube I have found for the little taps.

Hey, should'ent the clearance slot be a bit narrower and radiused -- just a thought. Otherwise, I would say it's a work of art, good going -----

Really nice job, did you consider a light spring return for the spindle? Comes in handy after backing the tap out. Looks like Dove soap, is their any particular brand that works best?

Jim,yes it is large,but I plan on using a plastic slip plate on small parts. I also may make another tap holder for taps to 1/4-xx,you really can't see it in the picks,but the edges are broke.

Snowman,almost,it's a Yor-lok.Wanted something soft as the hard chrome has a soft center and I want the nut to wear.

Ed,I though about the spring,but I think it might be a lifting force and cause trouble on the 0-80 and smaller threads.I may gun drill the holder to lighten it up thou.

Soap? Any brand of white soap,Ivory,Jergens etc.
I do find the used bars that quit lathering work best thou.Plus me finding a use for throw aways makes Alistair feel proud

Is it just the photo angle or is the base plate blued, blackened, browned or colored in any way.

If so, yer process please? Always lookin for a new formula, ahhhh, chemicals.

Same guy you get yours from

Snowman,no collet,I threaded the holder 3/8-24 then turned a chamfer to match the nut on the end.Drilled and reamed the hole to fit the .1406" Tap shank and milled a 7/64 slot through one side at the top(it's actually the rectangular thingy just over the nut)to fit the square drive on the tap.Then I just used a .015" slitting saw to put two splits through opposite sides,The result,stick the tap in and snug it with a wrench.

Jrouche,no finish,the hot rolled was in the form of a 4x1/2" flatbar,it had a nice radius edge on it so I left it.The blue you see is just the ground finish on the top.I put a fine dress on the wheel and then borrowed the Dave Opincarne sharpening system to even the finish.(320 grit wet dry on float glass+a little WD for lube)
