  • electric motor clicks at shutdown

My air compressor has a Baldor 3 hp 1-phase motor on it and when I was rebuilding it I noticed that when the power was shut off with no load it would spin down and there was a "click" when it reached a certain speed and it would slow down further. It didn't sound abnormal so I didn't think much about it. Now my drill press does the same thing and I was just wondering what it is.

None of my other electric stuff does this...

Most likely the centrifugal switch kicking out. It controls the start windings in your motor. When the motor comes up to speed it opens, and when the motor slows the switch closes.

You are hearing the centrifugal starting switch return to the "start" position.
