    I bought a GM crate engine awhile back. The crankshaft broke off behind the harmonic balancer (vibration damper) at 12,000 miles (Sunday night, 100 miles from home ,$440 towing bill). I should have known I was in trouble when I found "Hecho en Mexico" cast into the block.

        Just quit buying a new car. Let them all eat the new parts they buy from India and anywhere else for that matter. There are thousands of used cars out there that wil get you where you want to go. It's all a conspiracy in the first place. The oil folks keep them from building a better carb or fuel injection. The scrap folks work for them to take up older cars and crush them to make sure we cannot find and older car to rebuild, and the parts folks work for then keeping their prices up so high you want to buy a new car. Guess it all works because look at what we are talking about. Now they don't build then like they used to!

          I'm with CntryBOy. Don't buy new cars. First they are a rip off and second we don't need any more cars on this planet. We are all technical people here. Learn to fix it yourself and keep that old car going. The only difference between them is the smell!!!

            Yep, makes sense. With an old car you've got a "proven performer". A new car has yet to prove itself!

              That's the truth - my trucks always smell like old farts and chesapeake bay retriever. Of course it doesnt make a real difference, I only date old women and they all smell like French whores cause they can't seem to smell how much perfume they have on. Damn, I do prefer the retriever's odour now I think about it. She is named Zephyr for a reason too.

                BUT
                Here the insurance here will give you a HARD time if you have a car that is over 10 years old!!
                Most will not cover you if you have only one car and it is 10+
                Bet the insurance are in on "it" as well.

                  Man can I ever get on the soap box on this one.

                  North American engineering know how, the quality of the trades and labor's ability to put the cars together were second to none in the world. Yet strategy of the companies has been ruiness to the industry. This problem could have easily been anticipated 15 years ago

                  1) No concentration of force. I believe the consolidated a bit, but a few years ago GM alone had 28 different engines, average cost to take if from idea to plant: $1B.
                  2) Assuming the majority of NA consumers are idiots. Let’s have a stupid number of models, and because they buy based on bobbles, let’s put 750m, into a face lift, new grill and dash, every three years instead of putting it into engineering. Assuming everyone was Homer Simpson, ooooo new grill, while the Japs and Germans gained share via better cars and less problems.
                  3) Let’s press our tier 1 suppliers to lower their price every year of the contract. Surely they can figure out how to make every piece cheaper, thinner, out of crapper materials, etc.

                  It sad for the good people that worked /work in this industry because they do their best they can and don’t understand why everyone thinks the product is crap. The reality is they are just victims of an executive group that failed to adjust an aging strategy and failed to anticipate and appreciated the impact of globalization. One Tier 1 CEO told me Detroit could tern out a product of the quality of a Merc 320 or BMW 540 and retail it for 25k if the process wasn’t so idiotic.

                    Yikes, until two years ago, my and the wife's cars were over 10 years old. My primary "car" is 1991 one ton pickup that they will bury me in one day, because there is no way I will pay 50k for a new one.

                      Can not say on the rest of "Oh Canada"
                      But here on the rock we "pay through the nose"
                      +2600 per year for 2 cars. One a 1991 the other 2004. Both Toyotas (Great cars!)

                        "Oil companies will not allow fuel efficient carbs or fuel injection!!
                        Why that story can be traced back to the legendary Fish carb. of the 50's.
                        They shot/bought out/ruined inventer.
                        Seems to me cars are doing very well on fuel consumption.
                        Compare mileage and power to a 60's or 70's vehicle.
