I'm curious if anyone has direct experience with the reclaiming process of Freeman’s machinable wax from a home shop machinist budget? What is involved in actual cost, the equipment and safety precautions if they exist?
To reclaim the wax get yourself a crock pot. I use the high temp setting when I am around to watch close. If I have all day I use the low setting and it takes almost 6 hours but you will not burn the wax. Pack the pot as tight as possible with the bigger pieces and melt that first and then ad the shavings a bit at a time. This stuff melts at 315F so don't get it on you---it burns like hell and has a lot of heat to lose so it burns for a long time. It would be like using a hot glue gun on your body.
For a mold I have some frames made of aluminum angle. These frames have no bottom and just sit on a piece of Melamine covered particle board. I ladle it in with a chefs ladle that I have preheated in the wax in the crock pot. Because it shrinks about 3/8 inch per foot it doesnot stick to the Melamine or the aluminum if you let it cool overnight.
Interesting ... thought it was going to be something out of my reach. Is there a "best source" supplier for small quanities or simply use a place like Travers?
