  • metal cutting speeds

I know that this is listed some where but I am not finding it. I am looking for the recommended cutting speeds for metal. Espacially for 4140.

I am running a 5 inch 26 tooth cutter at 180RPM with about a 4 inch per minute feed. I think that this is too fast.

The cutting speeds were/are listed in Machinerys hand book but I guess I am not looking for the right turms in the index.

Thanks for any information you guys can give me.
    Charlie.

At 100SFM that would be 53 RPM...
If that's a HSS cutter like I think it is, You're way to fast.

Listen to your cutter and machine and learn to read the chips.
By the way what kind of mill are you running a 5" cutter on?

PBMW it is a HSS cutter and that is the reason that I posted this. The cutter sounded alright but the life of the cutter befor resharping seemed short.

The chips are comming off the cutter rather small and they are a naterial color not blue.

The mill is a Nichols mill that I picked up a year ago for $50.00.

        Thanks for the replys guys.
