  • South Bend lathe is back

I found out last week that South Bend lathe is back in business. I took my Heavy Ten Toolroom Cabinet lathe bed for way regrinding last Monday. Took the saddle also so they will hand scrape it to fit bed.

Say bpsbtoolman, did SB quote a price and how long it would take? I have a 10L which I have grown rather fond of and would consider having the same thing done.

South Bend under new management is back at 400 Sample St. in South Bend Ind. Call Randy Reynolds 1-800 245 2843 for info. My 4' bed Heavy Ten I think was quoted at $950, but the scraping in of the saddle to the bed is another $270. Turn around time about 3 weeks.

Thats really exciting , getting a lathe reworked that way and by southbend at that. Did they say anything about visitors to watch any ot the processes ? or haw much they chargeheck I'd pay to watch somthing like that take place. . . . LOL
How is the tailstock to bed distance going to be handled ? Built up with Moglice or such? Did they give you an estimate of how much they are going to take off the bed ?

$1220 for three weeks of work.
If that is what South Bend charges you for the work, can you imagine what the wages are like ?
                LOW.......

Martin: chill out, that time includes lead time to get other jobs out from in front of yours.
it should not take any 3 weeks to scrape it back in just doing the bed and carriage to ways. they have full templates for it, and shouldn't have to do the spotting the hard way.

Oso , you seem to know qquite a bit about it. Is the "hard way " putting the carriage back on the ways for each spotting ?
And the template way leaving the carriage upside down and spotting it with a template ?
Anything else you could share about the operations ?
