    Here is a link for WW2 submarine maintenance, much of this still applies to industrial diesels today.

    Interesting reading. The GM engine is a V-16 with a bore/stroke of 8.75" x 10.5". So a visual aid to get an idea is a sheet of letter-size paper (8.5" x 11"). 1600HP @ 750 rpm, with a redline of 802 rpm. Air started, using 500 psi air. (That must take a helluva tank of air.)

    I think I actually stood next to a couple of these under power when I was 9. Even with the "David Clamp" headsets on, it was just loud. No distinguishable sound, just really, really loud. It was on a WW2 vintage diesel sub during what was called a "dependents cruise". I'm one of few civilians who have ever been underway, surfaced, submerged, in the various compartments, etc on a US Navy submarine. Wish I could do it again, without having to live the life of a sub sailor. It was very cool.

      Fairbanks-Morse, that’s quite a design. There used to be one at a gas plant near me converted to natural gas. It finally pushed a cyl. sleeve out and cratered. I would like to have seen it run.
