• OT: Sony Malware Worse Than Previously Thought!
On 6 December Sony BMG and digital rights group the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) issued a joint statement about the discovery of problems with the MediaMax anti-piracy system made by SunnComm.

The statement warned that anyone putting a music CD bearing the MediaMax software in their PC introduced a vulnerability that malicious hackers could hijack to win control of a machine.

Users were vulnerable to this loophole even if they did not install the copy protection system on the music CD on their home computer.
And if that doesn't get your sphincter clenching, this should.
According to SunnComm, its "MediaMax technology has appeared on over 140 commercially released CD titles across more than 30 record labels." Earlier this year, SunnComm forecast "that its MediaMax CD Copy Management Technology will be Applied to More than 145,000,000 Audio CDs this Year." Currently our focus is on the Sony BMG CDs, but we are investigating whether the vulnerability exists on other labels, and urge every label that has used the MediaMax technology to check with security experts immediately.
Sony's not getting another dime from me, and I'll be switching at least one of my PCs over to Linux tomorrow, so I don't have to worry about this crap.

At this point I would say the only safe way to approach this is to never put a music CD in your computer if the CD was released in the last year.

If you have and you are running XP or Win 2000 then you may have introduced an easily exploitable vulnerability.

Is this something that MS can update around? Hell, I don't mind. I already got a hundred updates from MS, what's another one

Thank you to our families of soldiers, many of whom have given so much more then the rest of us for the Freedom we enjoy.

It is true, there is nothing free about freedom, don't be so quick to give it away.

Since then Sony has announced that they are having the company come up with a pacth to fix the problem. According to Sony they were not aware of the other thing this software did (wink wink, nod nod) as the boys of Monty P used to do lol. it will be on thier web site and I imagine that micro suck will have it to.

Thats what I like to hear If you don't like what a company is doing vote with you closed wallet and feet moving to a different store.

OT not being a sports fan I can never understand about the DEtroit lions fans always complaining about the team and yet supporting the team year after year as the Ford family laffs all the way to the bank. If the fans would not go to only one or two home games on a Sunday the owners would get the message real fast.

Been there, probally broke it doing that
Been there, probably broke it, doing that!

MS has a few updates planned that will take care of part of the problem, but don't expect to see any real solutions until Sony loses the lawsuits against it (which are apparently multiplying like rabbits).
