  • Never ending jobs?

Anyone else ever get those jobs in the shop that keep comming back? Let me re-phrase that, the same job that keeps coming back though it's nothing to do with you?

I got one Monday, local fab shop wanted 8 angle brakets cut from 5x8x3/8" angle 12" long slotted with four 7/16"x1-1/4" slots each.I typically have them do the layout so if there are any mistakes they own them.

The first time I saw the brakets they had the slots laid out with a centerline and a start/stop scribe, they even went to the trouble to drill a 5/16" breakout hole on each center point to make the plunge easier.

The job went quick, only 45 minutes and they were done. They picked up the job and Wendsday called me back and said they had laid out the wrong end of the angle and needed a new set done ASAP,okay they sent them over and 45 minutes later off they go.

10 minutes later I get another call, they say,"uhhhh...well this time they got the right end of the angle, but only gave the radius centers instead of the overall length of the slot as the stop/start,can we get you to lengthen the slots by 7/32" each way?Sure I says, but it's gonna cost you
I just need one more tool, just one!

Ohhh yea, I get those usually some farmer,He will ask you what it will cost for (insert job here). So you give him your best guess,He says ok ,you do it the way he wants,he comes to get it but wants just a little more off here or some such, so you spend another 20 or 30 minutes on it and he expects the same price, well I just say,"I quoted it to you at one price and now you want it changed,I did that and you expect it for the same price?"
We settle on a price ,becouse that kind of job is my bread and butter(and mostly CASH jobs)I dont want to loose those.

Thank you to our families of soldiers, many of whom have given so much more then the rest of us for the Freedom we enjoy.

It is true, there is nothing free about freedom, don't be so quick to give it away.

I would be more concerned about the state, they have fewer people to chase after.

              The never ending job?
              cleaning and organizing the shop

The other kind are a little thin here, a large number of under-employed and retired machinist that work for food and/or company.

Dude, that is sooooo cold. Way to go!

Got called by the hospital today - going in Monday to fix eyeball. Good thing too, it started bleeding again tonight. If they don't make me blind, I should have 20/20 vision (no more glasses - yea!!) after Monday. Wish me a nurse with big hooters...I mean brains!!!

                        Thrud,

Good to have you back and I'm glad they are finally getting you all fixed up.

I work as a R&D machinist and look at those type of jobs a little different. I get alot of little maintance and misc. jobs that come back with a "I guessed wrong". Since I don't get paid anymore for them, it can be annoying but then again I can chalk it up as job security .
