  • SB Lathe building

I had a chance to walk through the old SB Lathe building last week. We had a call about people stealing wire out of the vacant building. It was kind of sad to wander through the huge empty building and think of the work that used to be done there.
Next I went through the building next door that was Huckins Tool & Die. Got to speak to the owner, Mr. Huckins, who was closing on the building that day, selling it to the city. SB Lathe building will be bought by the city soon, I think.

I served my apprenticeship at Huckins. Was one of major shops in SB, till Bob Huckins sold it to his son. Worked for his other son for about 20 yrs. Uncle worked at Lathe Works after WW2 till about 1980

I once got off the interstate at South Bend just to go look at the lathe plant (it was a Studebaker plant before SBL acquired it).

Looks like a Wal-mart site to me.....

Except nobody near there in South Bend prob'ly has any money, no more so than folks in Fort Wayne.... another scenic travel spot...
