  • Wright Areo Engine

I just finished reading a book about Wrights Last Watercooled engine they tried to build. It was a 42 Cylinder radial (2160 cu in ) for 2,350 hp and they were hoping to get 4000 hp by making it a 72 cylinder engine

Didn't a guy named Manly build a 5 cylander radial engine that predated the Wright brothers first flight? I recall it was something like two lbs per horsepower.

Yes he did, it was actually 2.3 lbs per hp, the plane it was tried on crashed as the pilot had no idea how to fly.....one week later the Wright Brothers flew successfully. site to read a bit about it is http://www.smithsonianmag.si.edu/smi...ect_nov97.html
