        Hi Chaps, having mainly recovered from my Lurgi, I am back at work on "light duties" so in the last couple of days, I have been building the new straight flue to try and cure the forge smoking problem. I have built a coupler/ hinge to join the new flue to the old one, and to install and maintain the flue extractor, and so that I can lower the flue in windy weather, as we do get a lot of wind in winter and early spring. There is also a slideshow of rebuilding and upgrading my BEN patents air compressor. Like, comment, subscribe if you want, but above all, Enjoy!!

          Phil if you stand the hinge pin itself a couple inches farther back from the stack itself it will allow you to easily accommodate an internal astragal to the stack. The astragal will give the stack draft properties very near what they were prior to the hinging retrofit.

          Also prior to corrosion weaving its magic on the stack walls adding truss rods to the stack will increase strength tremendously without adding a lot of weight. That will minimize chances of bending during lowering and raising functions.

            Thanks Franz, only just seen this as I cut short my forum browsing last night as I was falling asleep! I have finished the flue connection today, and did put tie rods on so that the vertical weight of the flue is carried to the wall and roof rather than the lower section of flue. As the flue had a former life on an oil fired boiler, there is corrosion, but it now wears an internal coat of veg oil topped out with a layer of hard creosote from the early lighting tests before I learned to run it hot and fast, to get rid of it. Next job will be to modify the outlet of the flue fan to your 1/3 of total flue area spec, and the outlet will be flush with the top of the hinged coupler. Astragal???, vaguely heard the word but applied to glazing bars on double glazed upvc windows! I guess you mean something inside the flue to cover the edge of the coupler to ease gas flow? there is a small step on one face, but the other three are flush. There is a slight size discrepancy between the old flue and the new one on one face. Can you sketch out what you mean or send a link? Once again thanks for the info. Every day is a school day!

              Just flat stock coming up from inside the lower element of the stack Phil providing a telescopic fit for the upper stack. Only needs to stick up about an inch to minimize air infiltration from the joint causing turbulence. Think of it as 2 joints of heat duct coming together.

                  Well here is an odd offering! have only been to the shop one day this week, as the weather has been very bad, and I am still a bit under it! Here is a job I did a few years ago on a Citroen 2cv, rebuilding the back end with new inner wings and boot floor. Beware of these cars! If you ever drive one, you will want one! They are so much fun, and dead easy to mend, but the downside is, they ROT! Not at all the car I would ever thought I would enjoy driving, just goes to show that performance isn't everything.                     Hi boys and girls, still not feeling quite right, but almost there! I did nothing this week, due to the storms and the wind howling round, so I have put together a slideshow of one of our late great engineering works, Doxford and Sons, of Sunderland, Marine engine builders.
