    Steppers should never exceed the plate rated current, in fact it should be kept at this rated value for peak performance, the problem is that inductive reactance increased with rpm, causing a drop in current, and subsequent torque.
    To offset this modern drives are powered at a much higher voltage than the motor could take, but the drive current is monitored and maintained with the increase in impedance.
    The old/original stepper drives used to use a series resistor which caused the same effect, albeit, crudely.
