Ah, I see now. Well, I'm going to be using this primarily for spraying on surfaces.

From what I read, 70% should be fine for that, as alcohol needs be over 60%. Haven’t run the numbers, but I doubt you could mix enough glycerol to get it to gel without dipping under 60%.

Glycerin won't make it gel anyway, it's just an emollient for the skin. for spraying I'd be using dilute clorox anyway. Or denatured, which is easy to get, just don't breath the vapor.

Not my understanding of it, but suppose I’ll know for certain this weekend.

As for denatured, well, I recall a long thread on that recently. Colloidal silver may not be so bad an idea either.

Personally, I’ll be following the WHO recipe, which yes, I apparently missed seeing in Post 21.

Will note, though, that Post 21 did not state that McMaster had ingredients in stock as of Sunday, and supposedly they’re impossible to find.

Look at the proportion, it's 16ml in 1000ml, it's just a little grease for your hands! It does not add 'gel' and there's absolutely no benefit in spraying it unless you desire to get everything a little greasy. I have made and am using the WHO recipe with denatured. trust me.

Perhaps we’re using the term “gel” differently?

Was someone else talking about spraying, with the 70% he bought. I merely passed on that 70% likely works as a sprayed on disinfectant, as they said they would use it for.

As for denatured, I recall seeing a long thread on that. Didn’t bother reading, as safe alternatives are readily available. And far as I’m concerned, you’re random guy on the Internet. Why should I trust you? Or whoever verywellhealth.com is? 🤷‍♂️

                WHO? Likely trustworthy.

That was my long thread on denatured, lucky you that iso or ethyl are available, they're not here. As for not trusting that site about chlorine, there's probably 10,000 other sites with the exact same info. I only asked you to trust me that the glycerine wouldn't gel the alcohol as I've already made the WHO recipe. And if your definition of gel doesnt mean to thicken, that would be fascinating.

I ordered the 99% glycerin and 70% Isopropyl alcohol from McMaster yesterday and received it today. I mixed 10oz of the alcohol solution with 4oz of glycerin and 10 drops of lime juice. My hands were pretty sticky afterwards so I added some more alcohol. I figure that gives me more than 60% alcohol in my home brew. Whew, finally. No more Lysol.

Jim, I was able to order 1 16oz bottle of the alcohol. Also, I noticed all the ready made sanitizer from McMaster was unavailable.

                    Now, onto project homemade mask.

I ordered a case of 12 bottles of the isopropyl because McMaster said that's how they sell it. Yesterday I got one bottle and a bottle of glycerin. I'm supposed to get 10 more bottles tomorrow (from my first order). Dunno about the remaining one. We shall see.

I might experiment with hand sanitizer - I figure I'll add 1.6 oz glycerine to 16 oz. 70% isopropyl, with the resultant being 64% isopropyl. See if that's easier on the hands than straight alcohol...

EDIT: I see the WHO recommendation is 2% glycerine. That's probably more like 66% alcohol, should be good.

Quite unlike McMaster to screw up shipping, but the isopropyl arrived 2 days later than promised.

The $37 hazmat fee could have been mentioned up front, but no point in steering now.

For something deemed unobtainable, was remarkably easy to get.

Not sure what to do with this, Gelflex.

Beyond asking that you keep your bad advice about the safety of denatured alcohol to that thread.

As for gelling isopropyl, I will be adding 99% isopropyl to 99% glycerol tomorrow, with a bit of peroxide, and will be surprised if the result is not a gel.

I made that recipe (see post #21). It's a spray. Can it be a gel too?

Apparently, if you say it forcefully enough. You and I just don't have what it takes to make it gel!
