  • Carbide insert hole sizes

    Can someone tell me what the ansi hole size for a screw style insert is? I measured one at .150. Do these use a 10-24 screw? I've looked at 20 +sites and charts without finding definitive hole sizes.
    The other inserts I have use a 4mm screw which is too large for the others so I'm thinking of making insert holders for those that have a smaller screw. Thanks

    Not all inserts are screw down, many have a hole that a lock pin fits through and pushes the insert into the pocket, a clamp is then used to hold it down. These also hold the anvil in place.

    This is a clamp down insert with a 5/16" Dia. hole for the lock pin.

        The inserts that I have are metric. I'm not sure but I thought all insert sizes were designated in metric? Anyway, mine take either 3.5mm or 2.5mm depending on what I'm using.

          According to the Engineers Black Book, the forth character of the insert type designates fixing, clamping or chip breaker style. There's no designation for screw size so I would think that selection is left up to the tool holder manufacturer. The size of the screw will depend on the size of the insert but I didn't see any correlation to screw size. It's up to the tool maker.

            I have several types with .150 holes (sq, round, triangle). All use a lock pin / wedge pin instead of a screw.

              Insert sizing is actually in fractional inches and metric designations are rounded to close approximation. Screws I'm not sure if they commonly exist in imperial threads?

              Still unclear what OP actually has but:
              TCMT16xxxx(ANSI TCMT3xxx) commonly uses M4 metric screws, some chinesium ones appear to use also M3.5
              not sure if insert holders in North American market have also some other imperial screw size in these.
              TCMT11xxxx(ANSI TCMT2xxx) uses M2.5 metric screw
