I was told that a free download of The Third Machinist Bedside Reader is available on line but the two places I tried were scam websites!
Does anybody have a link to a site where it can be done?

I found all three of them on archive.org, but darned if I can find that link again.

I'm not surprised at the scam sites. There's nothing at luatard.com about a free downloadable version. So if there is one out there it was scanned and posted by someone without permission. And perhaps it's just a rumor to get you to their website and fleece your machine for data.

You did good. Each volume is going between $200 and $300 on the used book market nowadays. That's for each volume. That's why I gave up on owning certain books, I just can't do that!

I also bought them all many years ago, and M. Luatard did not strike me as the type to give his efforts away for free. Of course, times do change.

Funny thing about it is, his original prices were far cheaper than the used market nowadays. Last I checked his website, they are no longer in print

Like I said, you did good. That book collection of yours is worth well over a grand at todays prices.
I would hang on to them.
As it is, I've managed to scrounge up most of the same info from freely available sources (out of copyright)
but its taken years to do it.
It all fits easily onto a single DVD.
By the way, I do have the complete set of Audel's Engineer's and Mechanic's guides from the 1920's,
a set of reprints from 1938, and another set of reprints from the 40's.
And yes, I have read and compared all of them.

I contacted archive.org and that's exactly what it was: a total copyright violation. The person who uploaded the books is apparently in Germany and can't be prosecuted under US law. EDIT it may not matter anyway if Lautard is Canadian, US law won't apply. But whoever uploaded them is very, very foolish at best, and could well end up in jail for a while, depending on which country gets him.

From what I understand, Guy Lautard no longer has control of the copyright to these books due to a divorce or something or something like that. I seem to recall some posts about that on here.

So they have been out of print for a long time. It's a shame because I find them to be really entertaining books. Some good shop info and and a relaxed style that I find fun to read. I have the three bedside reader books in paperback. I do sort of wonder what became of him personally, he seemed like an interesting person.

Is that what happened? I have no idea, haven't been following that closely. It would indeed be a shame, from what I understand they're a gold mine of info and likely irreplaceable.

I would say probably, especially the entertaining stories. I own all three, and love them.

Concur.
Whoever could or would buy an illegal download or PDF file is/was doing Lautard out of money.
I purchased all 3 MBR legally in the States, a friend from San Fran was the postal address, and he brought them over here in his suitcase.
I also did not realize they were fetching that type of Dollar.
I think mine were around 35-40$ a piece back when.
