V block clamp question

I have always thought those were for additional support when using the block in a horizontal position. You can screw it down to touch the datum surface to hold the block level, and use the other one like a jam nut to keep it from moving. Anything of weight in the V part will make it want to tip down in that direction.Kansas City area

It looks like someone tried to copy the Starrett 567 V-block clamp.
For added support when the v-block is laid on it's side.
