They did conventional shapers too, nycnc shop visit to ta or tacrafted showed one, seems East German die making machine, think they did punch shapers ( awesome things but complex)

That is a sweet looking shaper indeed! Those controls are beautifully thought out.
As for the sidewise action: is there something other than the ability to angle the table that would've dictated that. i.e. are there aspects of the mechanical actions they chose that would be hard, or impossible, to implement with normal front-to-back motion?
For some reason front-to-back strikes me as much more robust.
