O/T: Flashlight. Nitecore P20 V2 is what I am looking at?

I have another small flashlight for my old eyes in the shop, you know, to find that part that "sprang" out of sight.

Olny issue I see with this one is the newness. The P10 is almost the same flashlight but ten bucks cheaper and in use for sometime.

So? Any advise. I dont want some of these three fer one lights you see on amazon for 19 bucks. Been there.

I like Cree and Nitecore so would be interested in any opinions of similar lamps from other manufactures that you deal with or these lamps specifically.

My Nitecore is an older model: It's a Defender Infinity. Despite being more than 10 years old I use it in the kitchen whenever I need to see the thermometer through the glass door of a dark oven or to find the liquid level of a semi opaque container. It's design is rather antiquated, with the ability to set the brightness by twisting the head in a certain sequence. Sitting next to it on the counter is a single LED Harbor freight 2AAA Techlight LumenMaster 200 and a couple floods that utilize COB LEDs.

The general design of the P20 V2 looks pretty good. It's stupid bright on high and useful up close on low. It remembers what level it was last used at, which can be really nice or a pain in the butt. For example, I have several lights that go off - low - medium - high - strobe - off so I'm used to turning them on with a click-click to start at medium.

I suspect that I'd find it difficult to orient the "Pedal" such that it was centered under my thumb when I lit it up. If it was my only light I'd eventually get used to it.

Actually I've been quite happy with my cheap Banggood "Meco" flashlights, which I've had for several years. They are $2.34 each and available in black, silver, and gold (which I have). They operate on a single 1.2-1.5V AA cell and will even work on a mostly depleted cell to about 0.8 volts. It has a zoom lens as well. I carry one in my pocket and elsewhere, and I don't worry about losing or damaging it. Not very bright, though, and certainly not 600 lumens or 7 watts as advertised, but works for me.

Yes Paul. I do have some very inexpensive types also. All over the garage, I dont put things in my pockets. They are indispensable.

I doubt that you will get much light out of a battery that is running at .12 volts. Once it's boosted to more than 2.5 volts the current draw will be more than the battery can provide.

Exactly! The low power part was a major plus. My old one was single stage. If I was looking for a "white metal" tool in a drawer it would wash it out.

The strobe is not needed, give myself a damm seizure in the shop..

I bought some from Banggood, the ones with adjustable lens and multi-mode click switch. Takes 3 triple 'A' cells or will work from an 18650. I figured they would probably be crap, but now they are my 'go to'. I have an expensive one too, but it doesn't work any better than the others. In fact, it's the only one which has killed its battery, and it doesn't get as much use as the others.

If the idea is to have light when you want it, I can't fault these $4 ones. I don't use the mickey mouse modes, just bright. They click on and off in the last mode they were set in, so you don't have to cycle through modes just to get steady light. I don't need strobe or SOS, whatever.

Very similar hand hold size. I have small hands.

The p20i uses the 21700 cell vs the 18650. Thats the olny draw back. Finding them, they must be the replacement for the 18650 some day? JR

It not only uses 21700 batteries, but it looks like you may a need 21700i battery. It's a special design that provides both positive and negative terminals at both ends. The light can also use two CR123a if you put them in a special carrier that makes it look like the 21700i battery.

The diameter of the light should be around an inch, so it will work well in average hands.

Thanks for bringing up the thread. I have not looked at the Nitecore lights in a while. Now I'm thinking that I should get at least one of the models with a "mode paddle".
