  • O/T: Chess. I love chess. No one to play?

First off I enjoy playing the game of Chess.

I am not good. I still enjoy it.

Problem is with things the way they are I cant get a game with anyone (and I dont mind loosing).

I cant go on what is probably available, On-line Chess.

They would see my skill level and think "what are you actually good at?". Hahaaa. They would be correct. No way can I play whit those guys.

So, thats why I ask here. Bunch of old crusty machinist. Yeah right? Thats where you go to get a game of chess.

Ill set a board up. Any takes? One at a time please. JR

Here is my move. Board set. You go..

    P-K4....

I'm prolly about half as good at it as you are. I went to one meeting of the Salem Chess Club here about 50 years ago, got stomped so bad and so quick I snuck out in shame and humiliation.

I do enjoy it though. 2 days ago on Youtube, a guy named Down the Rabbit Hole uploaded a documentary on Deep Blue. I found it a fascinating two hour show (not done with it yet).

Back in another century, I played tournament chess for a while. Got into it because my father did it, he got up to the upper end of "expert" rating, but never quite made it over the line to "master".

I don't think I played enough to develop a rating. Had other stuff to do. Still do. Too much of it...... never had so much to do until I retired. Does not help to have about 7 or 8 hobbies.

To play the way you suggested in your post requires knowing board notation since the board you posted isn't active. There are plenty of online places to play chess just try to play at beginner level and you will do fine.

I am probably a lot worse at it than you are. My son loves it and is (was?) a member of a local chess club which met once or twice a week at a local cafe. The virus put an end to that. But he plays against the computer and he also plays on line against flesh and blood opponents every day. I will ask him for some web addresses for beginner's groups.

PS: Don't play against him unless you are up for some real beatings.

Don't worry about not being good enough, they have a rating system and you soon get matched up with people with the same skill level as you.

Never played it, don't even know the rules. I already like it more than Golf though.

It's kind of like landing a 777 into a crosswind with a cranky ground controller.
