  • New Project, a little different

Here is something that I've been tossing around for a little bit.
Inspired maybe be some of Weston Bye's work.
    Its a steam punk clock.
Check it out. Started making some of the parts already.

Great and unique idea! Your creativity is amazing, as is your workmanship. I'll be watching.

Finally, something steam punk that is fully functioning. Can't stand all those "artist" types that just put gears everywhere that don't do anything.

They actually do "do" something...they make some people (I won't say who) spin!

I'm praying Sid posts lots of pictures and posts of this as he proceeds ! I admire Sid's work, his workmanship sets the bar for quality. Only word I can come up with is "Perfection"

Please, Please, Please, lots of posts and pics of the build !

This is a neat project! I have wanted to do something similar for a long time. These were apparently a "thing" back when. I have been collecting pictures of them, here is one:

RB- funny you should say that. My thoughts exactly. Although art is in the eye of the beholder, the engineer in me wanted something that was more.
As you can see, the steam engine is just a dummy. There is a 60 rpm ac motor hidden in the boiler.
mall the gears will actually drive something. First is the second ring, driven directly. Next the minute ring. The entire ring will spin, indicating the minutes. Next is the hour ring. That will use a traditional pointer.
Steam punk is very gizmo. So the more “stuff” the better. But I need that stuff to be plausibly functional. Not just some goofy valve or gauge stuck on because it’s made of brass or copper.

I’ll try to take pics along the way and post them. Not something I usually do. Should be fun to build.

As Brian always says, “thanks for watching”

Do you have room to recess any of those bolt heads?

We just glue the bolt heads on with super glue.
This is art class after all.

I know. It take very little intelligent thought to just glue gears everywhere.

So far, all the screws holes (2-56, 0-80) are fully threaded.
Rivets will be most likely soldered.

The ones in the last pic with the dime. Screws, whatever. It would just add a layer of depth if the allen heads were recessed a bit; no need to be flush. But maybe the visuals are more appropriate with the slightly cruder look of them being right on the surface. I'm not an artist!

Doesn't matter if they're real or not.
