  • Motor for X drive - old index mill

I have a VFD for the spindle of my 40H mill and the original 3-phase motor hanging on the back for the table X feed that's not hooked up. It is a 1!4 hp motor and I'd like to put a single phase motor on it because I don't want to invest in another VFD for it. I have a 1/5 hp motor laying around. Is this a big enough size?
    Thanks

Run the spindle and the table feed motors off the same VFD.
Just be sure to use volts/Hz mode.

I didn't think that was possible. Thanks. I'll check it out.

The difference between a quarter of a horsepower and a fifth of a horsepower is only a twentieth of a horsepower, which is insignificant.
If your set-up is like mine, running the X-feed motor off the same VFD as the spindle would mean that you would have to have the spindle turning any time you wanted to move the table, which would not be ideal and could be downright dangerous.
