  • Flexible motor coupling

    Anybody build a flexible motor coupling like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mngpvll5wzo&t=792s
    Edit: that's supposed to start at 13:12, but doesn't, so you'll have to manually skip ahead.

    It's simplicity is very appealing. IIRC, Donn DIY has used this design in a couple of other projects, so it probably has some robust-ness.

    I can wing it with my typical That-Looks-About-Right approach, but if somebody has experience with it, I would appreciate their comments

    That should be mounted to a bit of sidewall from a car tire in a cross way. This would make it flexible.

          Thanks! Once again, it's all a matter of the search terms. "Flexible motor coupling" got me nowhere.

          It's good to see that the concept is sound & that the real-world version is not much more complicated (it does have bushings between the bolts and the disk).

                Yep, rag joint, as mentioned they show up in steering columns and also some drivelines.

                Dodge Paraflex couplings use the same principle, just a more refined approach-

                I just need one more tool,just one!

                  I like that design - seems inherently more flexible. You could do motor-coupling size with 1/8 scale RC tires. They might not be strong enough, though.

                    This is my temporary motor coupler that I haven't actually felt the need to upgrade. For the amount of torque I need for this machine it works perfect and is silent.

                      A piece of conveyor belting works well also.
                      CNC machines only go through the motions.

                        I saw a Vietnamese Oyster fisherman use a riding lawn mower tire and rim mounted on his engine pto shaft . This was slipped inside of a truck brake drum that was mounted to his winch gearbox. Inflating the tire completed the coupling and varying the tire pressure provided adjustable load limiting. Fishermen, like farmers are some creative people

                            I like it. It looks like it would handle at lot of angular mismatch & some axial displacement too.
