  • Maybe a better Chinese Bench lathe?

    Hi All,
I saw this youtube the other day and with the recent posts regarding Chinese lathes, I figured this Video may interest some folks.
It seems that a "Quality" Chinese Machine tool company, Sumore, is trying out a direct marketing strategy in Australia and elsewhere.
They stock a wharehouse in the country in question & then go for direct sales.
This Video is by an Australian machinist, Rob, Posting as xynude, and he is getting a 7 X 12 lathe from these people for AU $799, total cost, delivered.
That's about USD $609, a good price if it ain't junk, I think.
According to Rob, Sumore has a good reputation & is not just selling rebranded junk from that one big factory.
On 14 Dec he got the lathe in question & plans a detailed review of it this month.
I'll be interested to see what he has to say.
    Here's the link.
Inside information on a move by a major metal lathe producer that will make buying decent quality lathes direct from the factory painless. You heard it firs...

He now has the lathe, but has not unboxed it yet. Here's a video showing him flipping the bird as he points to items in his cramped shop

That was such a worthless video. That blatant waste of time made me wonder if he's being paid for it. Just open the thing! Under an NDA? Fine, but don't waste our time, just don't post.

The first video was him explaining the reasoning behind his agreeing to get the lathe. He also explicitly said he does not do paid reviews, he only reviews items he thinks people would be interested in.
that was the video I linked in the OP.

In his defense I will point out that he says right at the start of the second video that it was only to acknowledge receiving the lathe.
I also stated he had not yet done a review yet in the OP.
Sorry all that went past you., BTW Congrats on getting thru your College for the year!

I dont expect to see any great surprises in his reviews as the machines on the Sumore site look exactly like some I have in my shop.

Well David, I skimmed through the first video when posted and found it to be a lot of chatter about not much. But I am an impatient genZ. But the second ticked me off. It is true that he pointed out that the second video was basically nothing. But come on. What a tease. Clickbait. 5 minute video with a box in the thumbnail? Oh yeah, I'm ready for a juicy unboxing. But nope! Just a static shot and blather. At this point he's spent 17+ minutes talking up a plywood box. I don't even know that there is a lathe in there. Could be a box of rocks. Could be busted in two. Could have had the ways finished with an angle grinder. Could be a Sieg in blue. Any of those and now he's got egg on his face for making two videos about crap, any by extension so does everyone who has re-posted his content.

As a youtuber myself, I would never personally do that, I don't think it's right. I'd receive the lathe, unbox it, inspect it, use it, formulate opinions, then make my video. Otherwise you're building potentially false hype. Tons of free promo for Sumore, and we still have no clue if it's any good or not. Maybe I should watch his unboxing video and give him the benefit of the doubt, but I'm not a fan of these methods.

I have no doubt your intentions are great, after all, who would not like to see a higher Q at a small cost.

I didnt watch the vid. Keep us posted when she is up in running if they post it.

IMHO. LMM is a good importer, or was, I donk know. And the one other guy. Stevensen or something, I forget. I would recommend those importers/ JR

Thank You for the charitable words JR, I'll post an update if the review is worth looking at when it's done.
I guess if the road to Hell is paved with good intentions, the best that can be said is that I've added a few kilometres of asphalt today. 😁

This fellow seems to be interested more in "the process" than the product. Nothing against him, but if he wants to review the machine, he should get at it and do it. Too much commentary for my taste. The machine at low cost is likely a quality control reject from a Chinese factory making bench lathes to spec for others like Harbor Freight, or a hundred other names selling the same machines with minor cosmetic, label, and paint color changes.
