You talking about the Koma I showed? Hahaa. It does have a certain Jenga look about it.

Koma makes some nice stuff, I got this one cause it bolts up two the 1-1/2" bed plate for my boss5 without too much problems. It was a small job. I need to make new soft jaws for it now. JR

Oh, my bust. Maybe I confused the story. Koma is a US distributor for Bock. Its a Bock vise.Im sorry..JR

And if you look REAL close at an analog signal,
You will find that it has discrete steps.

Somebody who fully depreciated it on their corporate asset schedule. A write-off. Your tax dollars at work.

dude, you don't have much accounting do you?

The economic reason to toss stuff is if the net proceeds of selling it aren't worth the time and attention to do so. Obviously recapture and tax is part of the calculation of net proceeds, but as the recapture is never going to be higher than the sale price, you never ever put less in the kitty by selling it instead of scrapping it. Its simply a matter of whether its worth the time to do so, i.e. in business it means stopping someone from doing something else.

When I asked the production engineer if I could have them
and why they were throwing them out, he said that all their
other vises were Toolex brand, and he didn't want to just
have to buy jaws that only fit this Chick vise.

In the US, if it is a tax issue of writing off the value as scrap, the items MUST BE SCRAPPED. It's just an IRS thing, if you write them off for their residual materials value, they cannot be re-used, or you just cheated the IRS. Makes no difference if you "give them away". The IRS does not like that.

Info from the comptroller at a prior employer. (they had a lock on the dumpster to prevent scavenging when they scrapped out parts and tooling)

He was not 100% on the ball, I saved him a half million bucks in back taxes he figured to have to pay, by documenting R&D expenses that were initially disallowed. So he could be wrong, but it accords with info from other sources.

If the stuff got given away, it must not be a tax writeoff issue, but just an issue of convenience such as you mention. Or else they were just not concerned about following the rules.

Why? I'd like one of those super deals too! Why should I be the only one following the rules?

Well, actually no, I don't. Last time I had a class in accounting was in the 10th grade -- 1983. Using rules that were probably written in the 60's or 70's. I( figured it was worth a try anyway. It always comes down to whatever is cheaper.
