Was watching free diving a bit ago- here they are performing a routine, a timed route to take them to impressive spaces, take it all in, then return safely without leaving a trace as they say. They have about 5 minutes, give or take. That's one breath of air that they must bring back with them. I'm imagining they must have available a pack which could allow them perhaps two or three more breaths, and which would when exhaled flow into a vacuum bottle. For a routine which is quite short already because of the time to get there and back, it would seem a great improvement to be able to have 5 or 10 extra minutes on site. I think the limitation is the volume of air that can be sucked into a vacuum chamber from empty. That would determine how many lungfulls of air you could use. If these tanks are too small, you'd be lucky to exhale fully for one time- but that by itself doubles the air you get to use. Doubles your time underwater.
Of course you get to carry an air supply tank as well- carrying only enough air for what you can use. I don't see any of this being a big or heavy thing to pack, and it maintains the 'no air released to the environment' need.
There could be a 'safety valve', and if needed you could then vent exhaled air so you could take another breath. Your air supply tank would be the smaller of the tanks anyway, and with air at even 50 psi you'd have your two or three extra breaths. Does anybody make anything like this already?
