  • OT, Flightradar24 accuracy

    Where's that pilot?
I'm watching a plane on Flightradar24 that left Sofia, Bulgaria bound for Kuwait City.
It's now heading south over Philly....when it should have a short hop south out of Sofia!
    CMB505 Atlas Air.
    Is FR24 that screwed up?

    They put in at Baltimore/Washington.
Scenery and language may put them off.
    Carry on.

Maybe typo? Baltimore is BWI(or KWBI?) and kuwait is KWI
      Location: Helsinki, Finland, Europe

KWBI is ICAO code for Baltimore and KWI is IATA code of Kuwait International.

            Yeah, typo sounds reasonable.
As they were over Maryland I checked out a few other flights in the area and was surprised to see
            several military flights ID'd.
They won't do that over CT.
I can be looking at the plane going over and nothing on the radar.

              The "radar" usually is not.

It is a transponder setup in many cases, talking to the GPS on-board, as opposed to a real "painting" radar. Just the local area around the airport commonly has actual radar these days.

In aviation, we always use the 4 letter identifier, especially because of international operations.

Well yes, ICAO four letter identifiers when flying the plane, IATA three letter codes when dealing with passengers, baggage, cargo(?) etc .

From my point of view, everything is 4 letter. Now airline codes do change, my company is K4 or CKS depending who I am dealing with, and I can't remember who wants what. Luckily it's part of the flight number.
As for tracking a CMB flight, I didn't think those were in the system to begin with, not sure I'm even supposed to talk about them.

                      No Kidding? Haa. Stuff happens.

Its always interested me on how we have All the Nations flying in and out of an airport in the US, say Dulles, or Better yet, Atlanta. Everything goes through Atlanta.

So do all International Pilots need to speak English (The Queen's Language, sorry, I love the Queen).

All I know is IFF. If its not squawkin, Im talking. JR

International aircrew are required to have a level of proficiency in 'Aviation English' which is not quite the Queen's English.

I believe there is a delay of up to several minutes with those programs.

I seem to remember a delay being put in for security reasons.
