  • Another Once Great Product Now Totally Worthless

I picked up a can of this stripper about a month ago, can on the left........Brushed it on the top of one of the stands for my sheet metal brake. The stuff sat there for twenty minutes and wouldn't touch the paint. I ended up washing the paint off with thinner. If this crap won't touch air dried alkyd enamel it won't touch epoxy primers or any two part paints like they claim it will.
I didn't pay much attention to the label that says "Non Methylene Chloride Formula" when I bought it but I guess that was the main ingredient that did all the work. With out it the stuff is worthless.

The can on the right is the old stuff that would blister any paint right behind my brush and usually took off any primer and filler in one application.

Now how are you supposed to remove old paint for restorations ? So I guess if I accidentally ingest some of the stuff it won't kill me.

    JL...............

You can buy straight methylene chloride ($$$). I like lye (MUCH cheaper) - bought as a powder & mix as strong as you like. Buy it from soap-making supplier. Probably won't remove epoxy.

I can still get lye under various names in the "plumbing" section of my local Ace hardware. But a 20 mile drive will get me a few quarts of M.E.K.

Well I would just use the can on the right. It is, after all, the "right stuff."

              Stop drinking the paint stripper.

Someone once did and it ended poorly for them.

In the past I invented a perfectly safe table saw, it would not actually cut anything including your fingers.

              It did now sell well.

Yep. Just went through that myself when I rebuilt a little Hardinge a month or so ago. Bought a "premium" stripper from Sherwin-Williams since I was there getting some paint.

It had less effect on the paint I'd brushed it on, than if I'd mailed the can unopened to Nome. Had to get out some of my rapidly-dwindling supply of MC stuff to do the job.

Tried a can of spray citrus-based something-or-other from Homey-Dee. Degreased it nicely and took off the rubber-belt smut, but didn't so much as soften the paint.

Have not found a suitable non-MC replacement yet, Such a thing may not exist.

                Doc.
Doc's Machine. (Probably not what you expect.)

They even did away with aircraft stripper, that was the best. I would like to invite the people who caused this, to strip some paint with their preferred alternative.

The non methelyne chloride formula probably works with the girly man paints they sell today, no so much much with the manly man, cat could'nt scratch it paints of yore...
So I wouldn't say that it was a once great product, you just bought the wrong stripper.

I've found that brake fluid will strip just about anything I spill it on.
                      It's all mind over matter.

Since I bought it about a month ago I don't have the receipt. I could probably get store credit. Called the mfg. and complained. They are supposed to refund my purchase price.

I'm not much into the home brew mixes. Wouldn't know where to begin. Then how do you apply it? can you make it like a paste or jell so it can be used on vertical surfaces?
The jell was the best stuff they ever came out with. I can remember the watery stuff that ran all over the place and was next to impossible to use on any surface that wasn't horizontal.
