  • O/T: My state of California has gone looney tunes with power usage restrictions.

I got an email talking about how certain desktop computers could not be shipped from Dell to certain states due to excess power usage.

I thought BS, thats got to be spam.. So I drilled into the article further and sure enough. California has placed restrictions on some items that use electricity. One of them being certain dell computers.

    Dell's site:
"This configuration cannot be shipped to California, Colorado, Hawaii, Oregon, Vermont or Washington due to power consumption regulations. Any orders placed that are bound for those states will be canceled. Shop our CEC compliant configuration". https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/desk...p/wdryzr10v40h

What a joke, this state has turned into a self sustaining conflagration.

My neighbor was telling me last week that he ordered a new pump for his pool and the retailer had to cancel the order because that pump, single speed VS variable speed cannot be shipped to Ca.

I cant move, kids in school.

Oh, and I know how to wiggle my way around stupid rules and regulations. I have a 7kW solar system, tell me I cant use some electricity and Ill tell you to shove it where the Sun Shines JR

Cali went looney tunes back in the 90s. This is just another story to add to the already-tall stack.

It's getting pretty bad --- looks like my states in the mix also --- and yet for perspectives sake perfectly fine for "Jeb" to commute in his ELECTRIC hummer 150 mile round trip on a daily basis... but god forbid your computer takes an extra candle power or too... just plain stupid... tell them you only use it in the winter months and plan to heat the house with it instead of electricity (which im sure is ok by their rules) then you get use it under the "double duty law" which they might just have - no wait - that would make sense... so probably not...

And to think that this is the sate that wants to ban the sales of gasoline or diesel powered cars in less than 15 years!
Hell they can't even power up a desktop pc today.

I am waiting for them to tell all the elitists that live there that they can’t fly their private jets in and out….naaah, never happen. Only the ordinary guy gets to make the sacrifice.

That's an awfully odd way for a regulation to work. I found a discussion of it on https://hothardware.com/news/califor...your-gaming-pc

It seems that the concept is not to prohibit wasteful computers, since you can do many things to waste a lot of energy even with an energy start compliant PC. As a matter of fact, I can't quite understand why I could import/buy a more wasteful machine just by expanding the ram.

The single most effective thing that I did to reduce PC energy usage was to move all the 24x7 services (web server, DNS, print server, etc) from desktop servers to Raspberry Pi computers. My only "always on" systems are now a laptop, cell phones and TiVo DVRs. Oh, and my Pi farm of course.

It would seem that a far better regulation would be one to prohibit bitcoin farming and require that systems by default go into a suspend state at night or after a certain period of non use. With SSD the recovery from a hibernate state is wicked fast.

At the end of the project, there is a profound difference between spare parts and left over parts.

Is it actually possible to fit a solar panel up there???

Kalifornia, where the brain melts and you encounter radical theories ...I left there 30 years ago and believe in the saying "It's in the water"
I left some very logical friends there , but also met some nut cases that defy scientific analysis ( and seem to be the majority in politics ) . I call it "Fantasy Island"
It's a perfect place like Hollywood, where fantasy replaces logic and truth, and they know no difference .

While I can't offer much help, I can say that I agree with most here. My brother and his family live there and quite frankly I dunno how they can stand it. That's why I'm always inviting people to check out my area instead.
Just look at the real estate in the 716 area code, you'll be amazed. It costs 1/4 of what Cali costs, and you have all kinds of ethnicities, food, festivals, etc etc etc 4 seasons and all.
