  • Jet 3pgh lathe

We have a Jet 1440 3GPH metal lathe. There is a shaft in the head stock drive that has failed. We have looked all over the internet for that part and cannot find it. Jet also does not have the part as it is obsolete and there is no stock parts.

My question is, is there another headstock drive unit that would be compatible with that model lathe that could be swapped in to make the lathe usable again. Seems such a waste that the whole lath is shot due to one gear failure.

Any input on this would be helpful. thanks.

How about make the required part?

Short of welding new teeth and filing to shape, I don't have the equipment to make a new gear. Called Jet, they don't have a schematic diagram of the specs of the gear either.

Take the part out and to the nearest machine shop and see what it would cost for a new one. Otherwise look on eBay.

Or do some Google searches > Jet 321830_GH-1440W-1 Lathe Parts (mmtoolparts.com)

You can get the manual at https://jpw-assets.s3.amazonaws.com/...910_man_en.pdf and it has details of the gears.

This is one option. Once it’s out you can figure out some specs on the gear and see if anything is available that will either work or modifiable to work. This would most likely be less costly than having one custom made.

              Back to the original question:

Unlikely! If there were such a lathe it would next-to-impossible to find a drive unit to swap in. In any reasonable time.

As the others have said - get a new gear. It's not going to be that hard & it's the only reasonable approach.

Can you source an off-the-shelf spur gear or change gear of the correct module and tooth count? Perhaps you could remove the broken gear from the shaft and replace it, even if that means machining it off and welding or brazing a new one on. If it's a helical gear that you can't find maybe you could replace both the broken gear and its mate with straight-cut gears. Your mention of welding (or brazing in a piece of square stock) and filing to shape may be the best solution. If it's a straight gear you might even be able to hand grind a single point tool adequate to machine a few teeth. Clock makers do that routinely. You don't need a drawing or specs, just grind it using the other teeth as a template. YouTube has several videos on gear repair that may give you some ideas on how to tackle the job.

Gear replacement comes to mind because I had to do something similar when I broke some teeth in the back gear set on my Jet 1024 belt drive lathe. I wound up replacing all four helical gears with straight gears. At the time (early in my machinist arc) I barely understood DP gears, and knew nothing about the metric module system, but could easily source DP spur and change gears. It was a big job for a newbie, and I feared an iffy repair, but I saved my lathe and it's still working well 40 years on.

Is it the low gear, gear shaft?

Yes, I would like to have a 14-40" Seems every company copied the original. I think the original has metric and our goofy measuring system. Very nice lathe and did come in a 240vac-3ph unit. Thats that one I want.

For your problem I might look at all the other copy cat 1440 lathes and they are still sold. Grizzly might have the gear train or whatever it is you need. Dunno... JR
