  • help needed IDing a tool

    hi all,

my issues with scale bit me on the ass again at a couple of online auctions. I really wish they'd put a can of coke in the pictures

anyway, ended up with a bunch of way bigger stuff than I expected (3 3/4 - 8 tap anyone?) but I'm struggling to ID a couple of the pieces, so I'd much appreciate any help.

This one appears to be a special roughing boring bar with a C8 mount and 2 kennametal boring heads on it

but this one really has be stumped. 4 big azz bolts on the bottom and a key running lengthways. It's about 10x7" at the base and 14" tall.

Seen David Wilkes boring tools that looked the part, good channel but can be a bit “boring” ( I’m sure that’s as worn out as a Tufnol pressure pad )

          I'm jealous, I haven't got a "non skid" 12 inch rule.

oh man, I've had that ruler for literally longer than I can remember I like it so much I bought a similar one for my daughter last Christmas.

thanks all, most of the stuff is off a DMG SL65 lathe or something bigger. Also a bunch of other tooling and an ABTech air bearing rotary table. Definitely not junk

The price one pays sometimes, for not attending the auction preview.......
What was in that lot grouping that you were after?

that is true, for sure. Bit too far (7h round trip) to go for a preview though. Not particularly bothered to be honest, I can almost get my money back in scrap (it's 90lbs!).

I was more interested in another lot that I didn't win and I was going to Houston for a different auction, so I figured for $10+fees/ taxes it was worth a punt

What you have there are two 1-1/4" indexable boring bars in the making

I see your point. I try to limit my auction trip time to 1-1/2 hours one way max. and there has to be a very desirable item to get me to spend 3 hours round trip on the road.

yeah, those heads are probably worth more and waaaay easier to sell/ ship than the whole caboodle. Be a shame to scrap the body though, there might be some useful stock in there if the TSC holes don't go all over the place.

this is just a side gig for me, helps pay the bills and treat the family once in a while. Only done it a few times so far, but ended up with a nice PBA 6" 3 jaw adjust tru chuck and a SB9 follow rest basically for free the second time and a bunch of taps/ drill chucks +$350 the third time. Plus it's fun. I get to meet interesting people and learn about new tools/ tooling that I wouldn't otherwise.
