  • OT- To All Who Post on HSM - Assistance to our Continued Forum Use IMHO

Jerry Tiers recently posted a comment and part of it is very important and needs everyone's attention IMHO and I wish to expand a bit on the subject of posting pictures .
We use this fine forum freely , based on the gracious support of Village Press. They pay for Server Space while we load up the system with our postings
After a period of time , they may want to limit the posts (?) OR delete the history..... a valuable resource for us all

So how about refraining from re-posting pictures when responding to a post !
We all know what the picture is earlier in the thread and you can delete the picture reference when you use the ' Quote" button.
Doing that reduces valuable needed PC memory space so we can contribute to everyone's knowledge and support for a longer time before the Servers fill up.

Just a simple delete move will help us all
I hope George it is OK to post this ?
And our Thanks for the space !

Like saying please and thank you, doing as you suggest is only a common courtesy and a pet peeve of mine when I see the same photos re-posted over and over in a thread.
Thank you for bringing this up to every one's attention.

I totally agree, although quoted images are probably stored as the same file, so the server would not be overloaded. But I have noticed (and mentioned) that some posters seem to always quote the entire previous post to which they are replying, and sometimes their only contribution is a single line of text saying something like, "Hey, cool!". One should only quote previous material if it is really necessary to highlight what they are commenting about. This forum is a valuable resource and provides a (mostly) pleasant vehicle for social interaction as well as excellent technical advice and general discussion among a diverse group of peers.

That is basically what it comes down to. It is not taking up any more space from the original except for a lil over head to map it out. Piece of cake. JR

Yes, almost certainly only a reference to the file is required.

The more important part of the matter is the file size to begin with. As I mentioned, it is rarely necessary to have better than 800 x 600 resolution in a picture. Higher resolution may or may not be at the root of slow display, but it most certainly affects space on the server.

It would be good if we all made sure that we do not post pics on the site pics area which are overly large, and especially not full resolution pics from smartphones etc, which are often huge.

I suggest standardly using 800 x 600, which is all I ever post, and which seems to work just fine.

Not responsible for clerical errors. Or those made by lay people either.
Number formats and units may be chosen at random depending on what day it is.
I reserve the right to use a number system with any integer base without prior notice.
Generalizations are understood to be "often" true, but not true in every case.

8x6 has not been supported ever. Odd resolution. I

I do agree I need to limit my picture post sizes. I use our Host for photos. I select the Large size, not the actual size as to save "bandwidth".

I can notch my photos down to what HSM calls medium if it helps.

Or I could ramp up my direct optical line to stall some stuff? Naw, kidding.

I get it, some uploaded pics are too large of a file size for some folks. Ill do Med size for now on... Thanks Jerry. JR

Serving the same Pic twice costs bandwidth, which costs money, even if the on disc file system is only using one byte to find it. OP is correct. Not to mention issues of readability.

Yes! Some OP's are very picture heavy and when quoting it without deleting the pictures, the readability goes to hell.

More space or not - it's just obnoxious, want a prime example scroll a little down to "my week this week" and go to page 10, all done by the OP to boot,,, why would anyone do something like this. ?

The same reason people fill social media with descriptions of what they ate today, how their cat looked this morning, what they're going to wear, photos in all poses, etc.
Narcissism, exhibitionism, shortage of real life social contacts / loneliness?

All of my picture files are hosted by a third party.
This is anti-hobbyist, you actually have to pay money for it (-:

It's a pretty standard resolution for monitors....... Most third party hosts, like Imgur, support it as a standard resolution choice for pictures.

I think it's this business of re-posting a pic right under the same pic in your reply, it really is irritating, I can see dragging it to the next page so everyone knows what it's bout - that's normal --- but twice in a row - and then three or four? why

we've all made "mistakes" like this, but some just don't seem to get that it's irritating and also make a habit of it.... enough...
