    Whew...that was interesting! Loaded the ol' girl into my heavy half Chevy.
    Ooops...not so "heavy half" after all. Sunk the springs down almost to the axles but we only had about 2 blocks to go on flat ground.
    Picked it off and shoved it into the shop with a 5100 Gradall (I want one )
    Took about 15 minutes from loading to final resting spot. I like it when the boss likes to lend out his equipment!
    Ain't it wonderful...rust and all...

    I want to know where you managed to steal all that floor space. No wonder the springs were flat.

          Will you have it operational next week? Think you will have a lot of fun and frustration rebuilding it but when it is finished you will be like a proud new father. Glad to see you got it home without any problems.

            Ummm, what spindle does it have ?40,50 taper, B&S, or something really odd?

              I'm impressed do far. Got everything moving very easily...except the knee.
              It is frozen SOLID.
              I'm soaking the dikkens out of it with Kroil.
              Have to put a jack under it or something to crack it. I'm sure it'd bugger the bevel gear if you tried to loosen it with the screw.
              This thing is smooooth! Big heavy cast that moves with the tips of your fingers...I likey!
              Even has mechanical power for the X movement....bonus.
              Opened up the gear case....perfect! Not one chip out of any gears.
              Has a very nice oil reservoir with feed tubes for the spindle and bearings (if it has bearings)
              Only broken tooth is one on a bevel gear for the power X feed.
              Bonus...there is a little door at the base. I couldn't open it before but some Kroil got it loose.
              Very cool wooden storage box attached to the door.
              FULL of change gears! Some appear to still be in the original grease. Not one of them is chipped either.
              Jay, I have no idea what the taper is yet.
              It's a pretty big fat taper. I'll have to figure out how to measure it later.

                I think the last time I had a vehicle in my garage was about 1986 or so when I did a valve job. Hasn't happened again since...

                  I used Kroil (over a period of several weeks) to completely soak loose pistons in an old flathead dodge engine that had sat outdoors for many years with water standing in most of the cylinder bores! Good stuff....just be patient as you can and let it do the work so something doesn't break.

                  Be sure to make sure that the elevation nut is free from whatever captures it if you do try to use a jack to pop the knee loose, so you don't screw up the nut.

                  I just love a nice find like this. Three cheers for you. I found the local high school was getting rid of a Sheldon 12" shaper. It had already been disassembled rather brutally and was sitting outside. I have at least one lead screw to replace due to being bent by someone in a hurry to get it apart to scrap it. A few parts are not there (presumably went in the dumpster), a control cable was cut. Still, it will make a nice project and the important stuff is there. This should be a nice machine when done and yours should too! Glad you found change gears. With little documentation, even knowing what is missing can be difficult.

                    I haven't had a car or truck in the garage since I owned it.

                      Oh boy...I outsmarted myself. Thought the spindle was free but only the front half is.
                      This has a back geared spindle like my ol' SB.
                      I'm not sure if the rear bearing is siezed or if I haven't got it in the right gear or something.
                      I've looked for some kind of pin or lock like the SB has but can't find anything.
                      I'm betting it's rusted tight so I'm waiting for the Kroil there also.

                      Going to make a separate post for the knee problem.
                      I'm still waiting for the "crunch"....the reason why I got this for free.
                      Must be something wrong...the ways seem pretty fair, feed nuts are fair...good enough for me.

                        BTW....what do you suppose the change gears are for?
                        I can't see them going into the main gear box because you'd have to take half the machine aprt to get them in.
                        There is a gear on one end of the Y table. I first thought it was for a power feed but it isn't.
                        I'm now thinking it is for a spin deal for cutting helixes(this is a Universal mill).
                        I'm thinking the gears are for different rotation speeds.

                              isnt it amazing we invest so much time and and affection on our machines and yet the other half look upon them as competitorsand the poor machine
                              gets tossed out in the rain when we check out.CANT WE ALL JUST GET ALONG?

                              the gears might be for a dividing head, go on the table screw.
