Just an update.

Toyota has said they are "reviewing" the idea about charging a subscription to be able to use your key fob to start your car. The main reason seems to be that they got a lot of backlash from customers and the public in general complaining about it.

Who knew that people don't like being screwed with, apparently not them.

The marketplace would have soon solved this anyway.
When one automaker charges for something like this it is only a matter of time before one of it's competitors offers it without charge making it a sales feature for them.

Maybe, maybe not. I think the car manufacturers are all in cahoots with each other. All it would have took is one manufacturer to get away with this and the others would have all jumped in.

UPDATE. Toyota marketing geniuses are abandoning the remote entry fee, but now you need to pay "just a dime" to unlock the gas cap each fill 😂

Maybe, maybe not. I think the car manufacturers are all in cahoots with each other. All it would have took is one manufacturer to get away with this and the others would have all jumped in.

Cahoots or not, the market still would have solved it. Once all of the car manufacturers had implemented it, it would be a short time (or nearly no time) before a parade of workarounds appeared all over the internet to disable such a "feature" along with the youtube videos on how to do them, or five dollar gizmos on ebay that you plug in someplace to bypass such silliness.

The really scary $#!+ that everyone needs to understand is that any of these car companies that sell "connected" vehicles can shut your car/truck down any time they want to. There should be a way to disconnect from them.

Be concerned that criminals will shut your car down, rob you and take it any time they choose.

About ten or fifteen years ago there was a plan by some absolutely brilliant rocket scientist in government to have a shutdown sensor in the tail light of every new vehicle. The cops could aim a laser at it and poof your car quits.
This was squelched due to control issues from a dead engine and the miscreants could also get a laser or whatever it was to disable and rob/rape you or make you vote liberal.
