No, they are not anyone I know but I am quite familiar with that type of washing machine. We have one in the laundry of course and I have about six motors 'saved for later'. I have converted exercise bikes to pedal generators which are quite effective but no practical use and I used one in a CNC router table I made, it is configured as a stepper and is used to drive the router table gantry back and forth.
The standard motor used as an alternator will produce up to a kilowatt at 200 -400 volts, 3 phase.
The stators are wound in three coils and can be configured in star or delta plus every one of the coils is accessible making it easy enough to set then in series, parallel and series parallel connection. So you can get whatever voltage required to suit your need depending on how you wire things and the amount of mechanical drive available.
They can also be modified for less 'cogging'.
I too think they did a decent project although I would have done a couple of things differently.

Is it making something from junque when the Pelton blades are commercially bought? That's kind of the heart of the device.... (I know, picky, picky)
Aside from that, OKCNC machines only go through the motions.

Not responsible for clerical errors. Or those made by lay people either.
Number formats and units may be chosen at random depending on what day it is.

Generalizations are understood to be "often" true, but not true in every case.

He powers his house with a few of these. Fully off grid, electricity wise. Runs a space heater when there is too much oomph in the system, his batteries are full, and there is not enough draw. 24/7 free power is hard to argue with. I'd say not junque.
