    During WWI there was a dearth of dray horses due to the needs of the war. Even trucks were in short supply, causing carters and draymen to turn unusual sources of motive power.

    Here is Lizzie the Elephant pulling a large machine tool in Sheffield England during WWI.

    My grandfather worked in Northern India (Assam) as engineer for a group of collieries in the 1920s and 1930s. After he died, amongst his photographs was one showing several elephants pulling, and one pushing, a large steam boiler up hill, being delivered new to one of the collieries.
