  • [OT] Firefox (and MS Edge) browsers crashing - Win10

Lately I have had situations where I have been doing something (sometimes not even using the browser), and I will get beeps when scrolling or performing other operations. Then I will get a blank screen temporarily, and then Firefox will crash. I have tried restarting, and even running Firefox in "Safe Mode", and I still got a crash. I am now using Microsoft Edge and have not had any problems so far. There was a recent update to Firefox, and I have been using the latest version. I had some add-ons and extensions such as Ghostery and an alternate color scheme, but those were disabled in safe mode. The beeps seem to be due to a low memory condition.

[Update] Microsoft Edge also crashed while writing this post. I rebooted and am back on Firefox.

Does not sound like a firefox issue. FWIW I am running that latest release of Firefox also but have no issues BUT I am running linux so that no doubt invalidates the comparison.

You have something else going on.

For a start, check your system files : Using System File Checker in Windows (microsoft.com)

Yes, something else going on. No issues at all here (aside from one bum FF update a few months ago).

FF97 on 10 here, no problems.
Now if I could get rid of that auto forced download of Edge I'll be happy. **Perhaps that's what is causing the conflict on your machine.

            Check the Event Log.

The event log may give some clues (in reverse order):

(Error 2/21/2022 2:00:24 AM) The cbVSCService11 service failed to start due to the following error: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

I know that MPLABX IDE uses a lot of memory, in this case 1.7 GB. I have also had problems with Adobe Acrobat, using 23 GB!. And Firefox was using 473 MB. I have 32.9 GB free on the SSD, And I have 8 GB RAM installed. Maybe I should try using my Nitro PDF program, and perhaps install and use a later version of MPLABX, which is notorious for using lots of computer resources. But I wonder why it is allocating virtual memory (which AIUI is on disc) rather than RAM? [edit] 23 GB for Acrobat seems to be the culprit

              Maybe this will help: https://community.adobe.com/t5/acrob...e/m-p/12231091

I have opened two similar PDF documents. Adobe Acrobat DC uses 192 MB and Nitro PDF uses 41 MB. After scrolling to the end of the documents, Adobe Acrobat uses 201 MB while Nitro PDF uses 45 MB.
