  • OT: Anyone on here use Starlink

I just got notice that Starlink will be shipping my equipment to me in the next two weeks. I am really looking forward to having Starlink. It has to be better than what we have now. A year ago I was going to have fiber-optic cable put in the ground to my home. I had the contractor at my place to give me an estimate. I was ready to sign on the dotted line when we were contacted by the local government to ask if they could run fiber-optic cable across our land to reach the next town closest to us. Of course we would get fiber-optic service as well. They were even going to pay us to cross our land. So we agreed and signed on the dotted line. Since then we haven't heard another word and emails have gone unanswered. So while we wait for fiber-optic I will try Starlink. The hardware cost 650€ and 99€ a month service fee. Anything has to be better than what we have now.

Do any of you all have Starlink?

I paid my deposit Feb12 2021. Was initially scheduled for mid 2021, then late 2021, then in Dec got bumped to mid 2022. Still patiently waiting. Hoping i don't get bumped again.

There aren't really any other good options out here, and our current plan is about $400-600/month depending on usage. When we do get Starlink it will be a game changer. I'm really looking forward to it.

I know a few people that got in on the beta trials, and absolutely love their systems.

Awesome, happy for you. It's a pretty remarkable system. I wish we were in that situation, but apparently all the cells around us filled up very fast, as there aren't a lot of good alternative options. The cell is open where my dad lives, and I've been tempted to order the equipment to his house, and use it in roaming mode at our place, but I'll just wait. I've read about a lot of people doing that.....

We’ve had Starlink for about six weeks, and it’s been great - not as fast as the fiber connection at work, but much faster than the cellular hotspot that we had previously. I had worried about drop off during heavy rain events, but isn’t hasn’t been an issue so far - it’s more resilient in those conditions than satellite TV (DirectV). Not the best connection, but the best option I’ve found for broadband when choices are limited.

What are the ping times? I'm not expecting them to be as good as my fiber connection which is often under 10ms, but surely 50ms or less?

The ping times on my SkyDSL satellite dish internet range from 670 to 750 ms. Jitter is 30 on a good day. The connection is better than our landline DSL which is on a good day 300Kbs download. We live out in the country isolated from anyone else. Our closest neighbor is at least 1km away from us. Here in this part of Germany that is rare. That means no big push from any of the utilities to upgrade anything. We have our own water well.

Friend has one and while it was working it was working very well. I think there is something wrong with it now and he has not bothered to deal with it since he has 2gig up/down. The starlink was something just to play with.

It’s raining here right now, which is probably having an impact, and Speedtest has it pinging at 52 ms

That's good enough, especially considering it's satellite based. Of course ping times only really matter for gaming and other time critical applications.

The jitter is important for most tasks and ours is terrible with SkyDSL. Rarely does it go below 20 which is considered the acceptable level.

Had my Starlink for about a week. 60-70mbs on average with three devices connected and vpn on two of them. This is more than 10 times better than our current DSL.

Jitter or packet loss? Packet loss is not acceptable at any level.
