I bought a gallon of way oil 20 years ago. Still have a half gallon left. The sticky crap attracts all kind of swarf and dirt to help grind away at sliding surfaces. Then try to clean that mess off after it sets up. I much prefer hydraulic oil in liberal quantities to float the dirt away. Currently I am using left over refrigeration oil that I no longer have a use for. I use the way oil lube wire rope

Here is 5 gallons of the best Waylube on the market for $70
Sunoco Waylube 1180 is an ISO VG 68 lubricant specially formulated for the lubrication of machine tool ways and slides. It eliminates stick-slip or table chatter by reducing friction between mating surfaces. Where ways are heavily loaded it provides film strength and excellent EP protection.

They are east Coast suppliers and may not ship west of Chicago

FYI , The Metal machinery company's making Lathes and Mills after WW II had competition every year and Sunoco won hands down
Your old Bridgeport manuals and lathe manuals use to specify Sunoco Way Lube

We bought this and I've been using it for a short while. TBH I forgot I ran out of Vactra. Feels the same to me. Thanks Rich.

So... Guessing you're not the dumbass from YouTube that tried using WD-40 as engine oil and seized his engine? No, oil is not oil - there are different varieties for very good reasons. If you would like to shorten the life of your machinery and equipment, feel free, go right ahead. But don't spread misinformation that causes others that are not well informed to unintentionally do the same. Some substitutions are safe for equipment, some are not.

That's right. I don't know if it's worth a crap, but I love its red color, fabulous name and old-timey label. Back in my bicycle racing days I was told by a questionable source that the magic lube for hubs was one part STP and three parts MMO. At the bike shop we used it in the oilers for our repair stand pneumatic clamp heads. I used to call Strawberry Crush soda-pop "Marvel Mystery Oil Soda."

I am appreciating this thread because here it is difficult to find specialized oil. If I were in São Paulo, I'm sure I could find it.

But here it is difficult. Therefore, an alternative oil, like bar oil, is a great thing. Bar oil is easy to find.

Thats why I like to cut my grease down with kerosene. Works on everything. Sort of like anal sex.

Right-ho........... Didja know that gun oil will work a lot better in your tranny and differential than the stuff they sell for those? The car makers don't want you to find out about that..............

And rumor has it that bar oil and way oil are the same thing in different packages. I've been using bar oil for nearly 20 years. That said, the price of bar oil has gone up, and Rich is always worth listening to.

Used IN the horse, as a laxative.

While you're at the farm store look for winter grade chainsaw bar oil. About as close as you can get to way oil when you're running low and need a reasonably inexpensive substitute.

Used to work with a guy that used WD-40 on a 50-ton ironworker. Union millwright, no less.

Hard to detect sarcasm or lack of sarcasm in a text message.
